If caught in a rip current, follow these steps:

1. Swim parallel to the beach for 1-2 minutes.

2. Turn and try to swim toward shore. If unable to do so--stop--don't try to fight the current.

3. Swim parallel to the beach again, in the same direction as before. Swim for 1-2 minutes.

4. Turn and swim toward shore. Stop if you feel you are fighting the current.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you can swim to shore without resistance from the current.
