How to Sail Safely Near Coastal Cliffs

1. Check your nautical chart for coastal cliffs or mountains along the coastline. Look at the heights near the cliff symbol. Stay at least one mile off the cliff for every 600 feet of height shown.

2. Winds roll off some cliffs and hit the water with gale force speed. If you must sail near a cliff, reef your sails well before you arrive. Clear the decks, batten the hatches, and lash down loose gear.

3. Look out for those cliff winds that hit the water and "back eddy" toward the cliff base. This creates a dangerous lee shore. Stay well out at sea for safety.
